The Department of Russian for Foreigners of Kharkiv Automobile and Highway Institute was established in 1977. 6 teachers started working at the Department. The activity of the Department was headed by M.M. Amstyslavska. Since 1978 the Department was headed by A.Ye. Yurkovska.

The teachers of the Department of Russian for Foreigners provided teaching to 400 foreign students of main faculties, graduate students and trainees from 70 countries of the world.

In 1994, the Department of Russian for Foreigners changed its name and became known as the Department of Philology and Pedagogy. In these years, one of the first in Ukraine our Department uses computer equipment to teach foreigners Russian.

From November 2004 to the present time, the Head of the Department is Associate Professor, PhD (Education) L.S. Bezkorovaina.
